Look Development (LookDev)

Look development (LookDev) is the 3D animation stage in which lighting, shaders, and rendering settings are tested and locked to match the agreed visual style of a project.
It ensures that the final renders match the approved concept art and styleframes. At Myth Studio, LookDev is integral to our 3D animation process.

Frequently asked questions
How is LookDev different from texturing?
Texturing and shading is the painting and material work on individual assets. LookDev is the broader stage where those assets are placed into a representative scene, lit, and rendered to confirm the whole look reads right. LookDev is where you compare the rendered result to the design frames and lock the visual rules for production.
When does LookDev happen on a project?
Late in pre-production or at the very start of production, on one or two representative shots. The result is a sample frame that proves the agreed style is achievable in the rendered pipeline. Once it is signed off, every other shot is built and lit against that target. Skipping LookDev tends to push look problems into final render.
How is AI changing LookDev?
AI tools assist with rapid look exploration: generating lighting variants, material options, and stylised treatments for a scene in seconds. The chosen look is still rendered in the production pipeline so it integrates with the rest of the show. Our look development with AI workflow uses generation for ideation with traditional 3D for the locked deliverables.
