Animation Curves & Graph Editor

Animation curves: hand-tuned timing from Inchstones for Nestlé Compleat

Animation curves and the graph editor are the tools in animation software that visualise a property's value over time as a line, allowing animators to adjust easing and timing.

Adjusting the shape of the curve changes the timing and spacing (ease-in, ease-out) of the movement. It is the primary tool for polishing digital animation in both 2D and 3D workflows.

Frequently asked questions

What does a clean animation curve look like?

A clean curve has a small number of keys, smooth transitions, and clear ease-in or ease-out where it matters. Messy curves have many redundant keys, jagged transitions, and unintended overshoots. Most polish work in keyframe animation happens in the graph editor, cleaning up curves so the motion reads correctly without unwanted wobbles.

Are graph editor skills different across software?

The principles are the same in After Effects, Maya, Blender, and Cinema 4D, only the interface changes. Tangent handles, key types, and curve interpolation modes work in similar ways across tools. An animator who is comfortable with one graph editor can usually pick up another in a few hours.

Can AI clean up animation curves?

Some AI tools auto-smooth animation curves and remove redundant keys, useful when working with motion capture data or messy first-pass blocking. The artistic decision of what easing the shot needs is still the animator's call. Inside our AI-assisted animation workflow these tools are used for clean-up, with the polish pass owned by a human.
