Environment Design

Environment design: a botanical world from GROW for Sky

Environment design is the discipline of designing the worlds an animated story takes place in, covering architecture, props, terrain, light, and atmosphere alongside character design.

Whether a futuristic city or a magical forest, the design must support the characters and the story, leading the eye and setting the tone. Myth Studio's 3D animation team specialises in environment design and worldbuilding for brands, film, and TV.

Frequently asked questions

Why does environment design matter for short-form animation?

Even on a 30 second piece, the environment carries half the mood. A bedroom that is cluttered tells you something about the character before they speak. Strong environment design is set in VisDev and locked in design frames, then built out shot by shot in production. It is the second character in every scene.

What's the difference between environment design and background painting?

Environment design is the design phase: working out architecture, props, layout, and rules of the world. Background painting is the production phase: painting or modelling actual backgrounds for each shot, based on the approved design. Design happens once; backgrounds are produced for every shot. The design has to be solid for the production to be efficient.

Can AI design environments?

AI image tools generate environment concept art quickly and are useful early in VisDev. Two limits today: consistency across many shots in the same world, and translation into production-ready files (clean line art, layered backgrounds, 3D-buildable plans). Our AI-assisted animation workflow uses AI for exploration with a human designer producing the final assets.
