Character Animation

Character animation: the Tubies in Inchstones for Nestlé Compleat

Character animation is the craft of giving a drawn or modelled character the appearance of thought, weight, and emotion, by posing them frame by frame across a shot.

Whether 2D or 3D, great character animation relies on principles like weight, balance, and timing to create believable performances that the audience can empathise with. Myth Studio's character work spans projects for clients including Nestle, ITV, and Social Security Scotland.

Frequently asked questions

What separates good character animation from average?

Good character animation reads as thought, not just movement. The audience can tell what the character is thinking before they act. That comes from acting choices (intention, hesitation, weight), strong silhouettes, and clean timing and spacing. Technically perfect motion that does not communicate a thought feels lifeless, no matter how clean the curves are.

How long does a single shot of character animation take?

As a rough in-house rule of thumb: a single character shot of two to four seconds takes one to three days from a senior animator, and two to five days from a junior. That includes blocking, refining, polish, and notes from the supervisor. Multi-character shots, or shots with complex interaction, can take a week or more per shot. Other studios may quote different ranges depending on style and pipeline.

Can AI animate characters?

Today, generative AI can produce short clips of characters and is fine for moodboards or pitch references. It struggles with consistent character identity, accurate acting choices, and lip-sync over a full project. We use AI as a reference and clean-up tool inside our AI-assisted animation workflow, but the performance work itself is still done by human animators frame by frame.
